If you take away ‘Schindler’s List’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan’, I like ‘Minority Report’ a lot.

I know that 20 years from now if anyone asks me one question, it will be, ‘What was it like to be in Saving Private Ryan?

It was interesting to do a completely fictional piece. You know, Saving Private Ryan was not a fictional piece! So the challenge was: How do you incorporate real emotions? How do you incorporate aspects that people are going to be able to identify with?

As we applaud the hard-edged realism of the opening battle scene of Saving Private Ryan, we cringe at the thought of seeing the same on the nightly news.We are told it would be pornographic.

Prior to Saving Private Ryan I never worked with men. I was always working with some babe, and it was always about falling in love, and it just got turned around. I’m not looking for any particular kind of story. I wait until it comes across my desk.

Saving Private Ryan was probably the illest, sickest movie I’ve ever watched, and I didn’t see anybody criticizing that one for violence.

Tell you what, if there were gays in the army ‘Saving Private Ryan’ would have been a hell of a lot shorter film. There is no way it would take gay men three hours to find Matt Damon.

I do like ‘Munich’.It’s a really wonderful film. I mean, there’s ‘Schindler’s List’, there’s ‘Saving Private Ryan’. But ‘Munich’ – of all the other films, Munich would be the one that’s really, really amazing storytelling.

I made ‘Saving Private Ryan’ for my father. He’s the one who filled my head with war stories when I was growing up.
